A partir de la guerra de Vietnam, en donde por primera vez, sale al público imágenes de la guerra y no lo que los líderes militares y políticos le dicen a la gente, se entiende que es el papel de los fotógrafos crear imágenes que puedan darle la oportunidad a quienes no están ahí, de vivir lo ocurrido.
"But everyone cannot be there, and that is why photographers go there - to show them, to reach out and grab them and make them stop what they are doing and pay attention to what is going on - to create pictures powerful enough to overcome the diluting effects of the mass media and shake people out of their indifference - to protest and by the strength of that protest to make others protest."
Se habla sobre el poder que tienen lo periodistas. La gente en el mundo verá una historia de acuerdo a CÓMO LA CUENTA EL PERIODISTA. James Nachtwey dice cómo los periodistas y fotopriodistas se benefician de las tragedias de los demás, y que la única manera que él puede justificar esto es con la idea de que alguien verá las imágenes y cambiará la forma que piensa. QUE SE PUEDE CAMBIAR AL MUNDO A TRAVÉS DE LAS IMÁGENES.
